Most people who track their training are not tracking the thing that would actually tell them whether they’re making progress. They’re logging sets, reps, and weight lifted - which is useful - but they’re skipping the one number that contextualises all of it: proximity to failure.

If you did four sets of eight on the bench press and wrote down the weight, that’s a record. If you also noted that the last rep of every set moved at full speed and you stopped because the number said so, not because you were close to grinding - that’s information. The difference between those two entries is the difference between a training log and an accounting spreadsheet.

This matters because two lifters can share an identical training log and be doing almost completely different amounts of actual work. One is stopping at eight reps because eight is hard. The other is stopping at eight because that’s what the programme says, with three clean reps still in the tank. The log looks the same. The adaptation stimulus is not remotely the same.

Why Effort Data Gets Skipped

Rating perceived exertion, or noting reps in reserve, feels imprecise - and it is, especially early on. Most trainees underestimate how close to failure they are, which makes the data feel unreliable. So they abandon it entirely and return to tracking only what’s objective: the number on the bar.

But imprecise data, collected consistently, becomes useful over time. You start to recognise the difference between a set that ended at two reps in reserve and one that ended at five. You build a reference library in your own log. Precision comes with practice, and the alternative - ignoring effort entirely - guarantees that your data stays permanently incomplete.

What the Number Actually Tells You

If you’ve been stuck on the same weight for six weeks and your effort ratings haven’t changed, the programme may be the problem. If you’ve added weight but your effort ratings have dropped, you may be sandbagging without realising it. The interaction between load and effort is where the real signal lives.

Tracking load without effort is like logging how many hours you slept without noting whether any of it was deep. Technically accurate. Practically thin.
