Most people treat unilateral exercises - single-leg Romanian deadlifts, split squats, single-arm rows - as accessories. Something you do after the real work is done. That framing is backwards.
Bilateral lifts let compensation happen invisibly. Your stronger leg pushes a little harder in a squat. Your dominant shoulder takes over in a barbell press. The movement completes, the weight moves, and you never notice the imbalance because the bar doesn’t care which side did more work. Unilateral loading removes that cover entirely. You find out quickly that your left hip isn’t producing what your right one is, or that your non-dominant arm fatigues three reps earlier than you expected.
What Changes When You Train One Side at a Time
The neurological demand goes up. Balancing on one leg during a Bulgarian split squat or controlling a single-arm cable row requires stabiliser recruitment that bilateral movements don’t fully load. The core, hip abductors, and rotator cuff muscles that often stay quiet in compound lifts are suddenly doing real work just to keep you from collapsing sideways.
There’s also a carry-over effect that research on resistance training has consistently supported: training one limb can produce strength gains in the untrained limb, a phenomenon sometimes called cross-education. This makes unilateral work particularly useful during injury recovery, where you can maintain strength on one side while the other heals.
Practically, unilateral training is also easier to load progressively for people who don’t have access to heavy dumbbells. A single-leg press with a moderate load becomes significantly harder than it sounds. The relative intensity per leg is much higher than the weight alone suggests.

How to Actually Use It
The mistake is programming unilateral work as an afterthought - three sets of lunges tacked onto the end of a leg session when you’re already fatigued. If the goal is to address asymmetry or build single-limb strength deliberately, it needs to come earlier in the session, before bilateral work has already pre-fatigued the muscles.
A simple approach: start lower body sessions with two to three sets of a single-leg movement at moderate intensity before touching the barbell. Over a four-week block, most people notice the gap between sides starts to close.
The Asymmetry Doesn’t Always Mean What You Think
Sometimes the weaker side is weaker because of an old injury. Sometimes it’s just a long-standing motor pattern that got reinforced over years of bilateral training. Occasionally it reflects a genuine mobility restriction rather than a strength deficit - the hip that looks weaker in a split squat is actually limited by ankle dorsiflexion. That distinction changes how you address it, and it’s one you won’t find by only ever squatting with a barbell.
