Most people who struggle with consistency aren’t struggling with discipline. They’re struggling with vagueness. “Work out more” is not a plan - it’s a wish dressed up as an intention, and the body has no idea what to do with it.

Consistency only works when it’s attached to something specific enough to repeat. Not “lift three times a week,” but “squat, press, and row on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 6am, using a program that tells me exactly what to do when I walk in.” The difference between those two things isn’t motivation - it’s structure. One removes decisions; the other creates a new decision every single time.

The Problem With Making It a Personality Trait

Fitness culture has turned consistency into a virtue rather than a method. You’ll see it on gym T-shirts and motivational accounts: just show up, be consistent, trust the process. That framing puts the failure inside the person - you weren’t consistent enough, you didn’t want it enough. But the research on habit formation points somewhere else. Behaviors that get repeated reliably tend to be low-friction, context-dependent, and attached to existing routines. Not willpower-fueled. The person who trains five mornings a week isn’t more disciplined than you. They’ve removed more obstacles from the path.

What “Specific” Actually Means Here

Specificity in this context means the plan answers every question before you’re tired. What movement? How many sets? What counts as done? When does it happen? If any of those are left open - “I’ll figure out the workout when I get there” - you’ve already introduced a decision point that fatigue and inconvenience will eventually win.

This also applies to goals. “Get stronger” is not actionable. “Add 10kg to my deadlift in 12 weeks using a linear progression program” gives your training sessions a target. You know whether you’re on track. You know when to adjust.

The Shorter Version

Consistency is an outcome, not a strategy. You don’t build it by trying harder to be consistent - you build it by making the specific behavior so well-defined and low-friction that skipping it takes more effort than doing it.

The question isn’t how to show up more. It’s whether what you’re showing up to is defined clearly enough to bother showing up for.
